After having our summer vacation trip to Colorado cancelled due to COVID-19 (along with the rest of everything in life being cancelled) we were beyond excited for a family weekend getaway to Broken Bow. I have lived in Oklahoma my whole life and I can’t believe I had never made it to Broken Bow before now! It’s about a 4 hour drive from OKC and is far removed from the city. Definitely a much needed getaway.

Mornin’ Sunshine Cabin

Any time we travel, I research the heck out of places to stay. I’m always looking for a hidden gem. The cabin we stayed at was perfection! I didn’t even show Scott and the girls pictures of it on the website because I wanted them to be surprised when we got there. It was SO worth the surprise!

As we entered the front door, the girls squealed with delight. I couldn’t stop smiling either. It was everything that the website promised-and more! The owner, Dave, with Lake Life Cabins thought of everything. Every detail at the cabin was well thought out and well done. He even sent out a Welcome Guide App once I booked the cabin. It was full of anything and everything about Broken Bow/Hochatown from restaurants to hikes to fly fishing guides. Details and customer service go such a long way with me and Lake Life Cabins went above and beyond.

Dave texted me before we got there to let me know that our cabin was ready and asked if I had any questions. I asked him a couple of questions about restaurants and he was so helpful. He also texted me after our stay to make sure we had made it home safely, as there were storms in the area. Such a sweet touch!

The cabin we stayed at is called Mornin’ Sunshine. It sits on a beautifully wooded lot. It’s a one bedroom luxurious cabin, but the high vaulted ceilings made it seem so much bigger.

Walk in the front door and there are windows and shiplap everywhere. Chip and Joanna would be so proud! There’s a queen size pullout couch for the kiddos and the master suite has a king size bed with Casper bedding that is so comfy.

The bathroom is amazing! The shower is huge with 2 shower heads and the tile floor is gorgeous. There is also a full size washer and dryer in the bathroom.

The Great Outdoors

The back deck is amazing with an outdoor tv, fireplace, and hot tub. There is also a fire pit with plenty of firewood and all the tools needed to start a fire-perfect for roasting marshmallows for smores. Our girls would have had a great time even if we never left the cabin and they just hot tubbed it the whole time! But we wanted to explore.

Our First Night At Broken Bow

We arrived Friday night and had dinner at Mountain Fork Brewery. They had really good breadsticks and pizza. We walked around the area and tried out Okie Girls Coffee and Ice Cream for dessert. I don’t like ice cream (I know, weird right?), but the rest of the fam loved it. After we got back to the cabin, we all went for a late night soak in the hot tub. It was so perfect on a chilly rainy evening.

These breadsticks were so good at Mountain Fork!

Our First Day Exploring

The next morning Scott and I sat on the patio taking in the fresh air and beautiful view before the girls woke up. Once everyone woke up, we went for breakfast at Shady Oaks. Great service and the food was good.

Exploring Broken Bow Lake

After breakfast, we headed to Beavers Bend River Floats, which is just down the road from the cabin. The drive through the trees and across the lake was spectacular. We rented a canoe and a paddle boat. Being on the lake was so nice. It’s a beautiful lake, and we took in the scenery all around us.

We noticed a great swimming spot within eye distance of where we were canoeing and paddling, so we decided to check it out. The girls and Scott swam in the lake for a bit while I observed from the shore.

It started to sprinkle, so we headed back to the cabin because the girls wanted to get back in the hot tub. Scott stayed with them while I grabbed us some lunch from Rolling Fork Takery. We sat out on the peaceful covered back patio and enjoyed our lunch. It was really good. Rolling Fork has a great variety of farm to fork fresh foods.

That night we went to Shuck Me for dinner. It’s an order at the counter kind of place and it was really busy. We waited in line for 45 minutes, but once we ordered, our food came out pretty quickly. It was all really good. I recommend the clam chowder and the fried catfish.

After dinner, we went back to the cabin to roast s’mores over the fire pit, played a little corn hole, and got back in the hot tub. It was a perfect way to end our last evening there.

Our Last Morning at Broken Bow

The next morning we had to pack up for the road trip back home, but not before another soak in the hot tub. We also stopped in at the Hochatime Store on our way out. It’s a great little store to get hats, t-shirts, souvenirs, etc. with a really cool vibe of “Living on Hochatime.”

There were so many other things that we wanted to do but we ran out of time. It would’ve been nice to even just have more time staying at the cabin soaking in all of the beauty. We didn’t even have time to bust out the board games that are provided, and I love a good family game night! Regardless, we really enjoyed our short little getaway and can’t wait to go back!

We will definitely be staying with Lake Life Cabins again! The owner goes above and beyond and really cares about the guests and their experience. Everything was impeccable and we had the best time!

Have you been to Broken Bow? What are some of your fave things to do there?
